Really nice vintage parlor that just needs a little work/ TLC to get back up and making beautiful music again, as she most certainly did in years past. Our research dates this guitar to likely have been built between 1907 and 1910, if a Washburn historian believes we've made and error, just send a message us and let us know, we'd be happy adjust the listing. Our homework based on the label with no crown/ center strip logo with belt/ hand written serial number/ stamped model type/ plus many other identifying markers lead us to conclude the build date in the title is accurate.
Here's a little product description we found online from an upload of an old Washburn catalog from the early 1900's on the 217 model we have here:
rosewood b/s, ebony headstock overlay, mahogany neck w ebony heelcap, 18-fret ebony fb w three pearl dots at frets 5, 7 and 9, ebony flattened pyramid bridge, bone bridge pins, ebony nut, top bound w white celluloid and rope pattern, s/h inlaid w white celluloid and three sets of white/ black/red colored rings, back bound w white celluloid, inlaid backstrip, bone end pin
We've embedded a YT video made by Jake Wildwood/ an all-around good guy and vintage guitar guru! Check out his website/ reverb/ or YT there's a ton of great content/ gear for sale/ guaranteed there's something for everyone. We chose this video to give any prospective buyer an idea of what this guitar would/ could sound like after the necessary repair work is done.
Some notable repair work needed to be aware of:
-As seen in the pictures the bridge has a crack that runs thru the center of the bridge.
-Some various frets in different locations are lifting up above the fingerboard
-Some of the tuning machine gears are kinda stiff when tuning up the strings to pitch
-Old strings still installed on this guitar, the reason being is that the bridge needs the aforementioned crack repaired or have the bridge replaced (we will allow the next owner to make that decision), therefore there is no reason to stress the guitar with new strings tuned up to pitch.
Some cosmetic issues to keep in mind (beside the small dings, etc accumulated from being about 115yo):
-Appears to have some white paint on the back of the guitar
-Some finish hazing in different locations
-There appears to be a small crack that was repaired long ago on the side of the guitar near the tail block
-Need to replace the broken end pin if intending to play the guitar with a strap
-The crack and the end pin just mentioned can be seen in the last photo
-Some hairline cracks in the fingerboard that appear to be from simply it being dried out (may want to grain fill)
It should also be mentioned that in the time of this guitar's construction, the intended use of guitar would involve using Nyla-Gut type strings, however the construction of the bracing and the neck would also suggest the this guitar could handle a set of extra light .10 gauge steel strings being installed after the other repairs are completed.
Original chipboard case is included, and all the latches and the handle function as intended. Need more pictures? Have more questions? Just reach out and ask.
