Inside the Guitar Setup & Repair Masterclass at James Hood Guitar Repair
Over the past few months, we’ve been running a series of one-on-one Masterclasses focused on guitar setup and advanced repair work here at James Hood Guitar Repair.
What started as a way to open the shop doors to a few curious players has quickly turned into something much bigger—hands-on training experiences where real skills are built at the bench, not just talked about.
One of the most interesting things we’ve seen is the range of people coming through. Some are players who simply want to understand how to properly set up their own guitars. Others are just getting started in repair and want to build a solid foundation the right way. And in some cases, we’ve had attendees who are already working on instruments but want to refine their process and eliminate guesswork.
This isn’t a classroom-style course or something you watch from across the room. Every Masterclass is one-on-one and hands-on. We work through real instruments, real setups, and real problems—side by side at the bench.
Attendees learn how to evaluate a guitar properly, make precise adjustments, and understand how each step in the setup process affects playability, tone, and feel. The goal is not just to “get through a checklist,” but to actually understand what’s happening and why.
Some of the core areas we’ve been focusing on include:
- Truss rod adjustment and neck relief
- Nut slot height and proper string spacing
- Saddle height and action dialing
- Fretboard conditioning and fret polishing
- Diagnosing playability issues
- String selection and setup optimization
On the advanced side, we’ve also been working through:
- Fretwork fundamentals and evaluation
- Structural and mechanical troubleshooting
- Finish considerations during repair
- Understanding when a guitar needs more than just a setup
What makes this experience different is the level of clarity people leave with. By the end of the session, attendees aren’t just following steps—they understand how to approach any guitar with confidence.
That’s the difference between guessing and knowing.
After years at the bench working on everything from everyday player guitars and instruments to high-end and vintage guitars, the goal with these Masterclasses is simple: pass on real-world knowledge in a way that’s practical, usable, and grounded in experience.
There’s a lot of information out there, but very little of it is taught in a way that actually translates when you’re holding the instrument in your hands.
If you’ve ever wanted to understand how to properly set up your guitar—or take your repair skills to the next level—this is your opportunity to step into the shop and learn it firsthand.
We’re continuing to open up a limited number of Masterclass sessions each month.
